GRANDMA, NO!

Grandma, No! is a physics-based comedy game inspired by golden-age Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, developed by WALLRIDE and published by Super Rare Games.

Tasked with an impromptu babysitting gig, Grandma, No! puts players in the shoes of an ill-equipped Grandma watching over her grandson while tending to her daily chores. What seems like typical housekeeping quickly dissolves into chaotic challenges with bizarre houseguests, unhinged physics interactions and emergent questlines popping up at a moment's notice to derail your plans.

I worked on Grandma, No! from March 2022 when I joined WALLRIDE, until its release in May 2025, serving as the team's technical artist.

As technical artist, my responsibilities during development of Grandma, No! were:

  • Retopologizing and rigging character sculpts in 3ds Max

  • Assembling control rigs for animated characters in Unreal

  • Modelling and texturing different unlockable outfits for Grandma

  • Modelling and texturing simple props and modular environmental assets

  • Collaborating with programmers to ensure art assets were imported and integrated into Unreal seamlessly

  • Working with geometry collections to create destructible assets

  • Developing materials and shaders to enhance visuals and complement gameplay, with examples including:

    • Outline shaders for pickup objects

    • Object dithering based on camera position

    • Texture layering for overlaying dirt, burns and splats on characters

  • Creating the game's particle systems using sprite emitters, mesh emitters and sprite sheet-based animations, with examples including:

    • Splash effects with decals

    • Mesh-based fire emitters

    • Particulate matter such as dust motes, ash, and pollen

Grandma, No! is available for purchase on Steam.
